Abbey Home Farm is a 650 hectare working organic mixed farm in Gloucestershire, committed to organic practices and passionate about connecting the local community - especially children and young people - with the food they eat.
With their team managing partners Will and Hilary have been hosting educational day visits for over 20 years. Having hosted a handful of week long visits through the Soil Association's 'Farm Academy' programme in 2012/13, they realised what a powerful impact a residential stay could have thus The Farm Project CIC was created in 2015 and is now led by their daughter Maya.
What's on the farm
Dairy 40 cows, principally Dairy Shorthorns and their young stock
Beef 25 - 30 cows, commercial herd of South Devons, Shorthorn/Aberdeen Angus cross cattle producing quality finishing stock
Pigs Hampshire x Landrace and Glos Old Spot breeding sows, 2 boars & their progeny
Sheep closed flock of 500 Lleyn and Lleyn Cross ewes and producing lamb and breeding replacements
Poultry egg production (310 hens) and meat birds (4 flocks of 170 birds)
Cereals 300 ha
Woodland Approx 40 ha
Vegetable Production 10 ha – vegetables, soft fruit, herbs and cut flowers
Dairy Processing Unit Pasturised milk, yoghurt, butter, soft cheese and cream
Butchery Animals born and raised on the farm (slaughtered locally)
Farm Shop and Cafe Full of delicious food from the farm as well as further a field. All certified organic
Nursery 16 children a day, 48 weeks of the year. The whole farm is their classroom!
Conservation the farm is part of the HLS Environmental Stewardship Agreement with emphasis on bird habitats and feed sources, beetle banks, pond restoration and management, permanent headland margins, enhanced hedgerow management and preservation of archaeological features.
Holiday accommodation A green field family campsite, a couple of cotswold stone cottages and a small handful of off grid huts and yurts
